about

On a tape labelled "Lemonloaf Demos" recorded prior to Chicken Pot Pie with guitarist Mike Scott

SONG NOTES: This song was sort of a revelation to me, as I had completely forgotten about it. It strikes me as a more interesting song than, say, Rubber Duck, yet it didn't make the EP - maybe it was too political or something haha. By contrast, another song that I forgot we had recorded, Spanish Fly, was left off this compilation as it was just too embarrassing (yes, surprisingly there is a threshold for that!)

TECH NOTES: Beat Me Up is not listed on the original track sheet, but we can assume tracks were assigned in the same fashion as above

lyrics

BEAT ME UP (demo)

Used to say "give peace a chance"
Used to say "give peace a chance"
Now you try to beat me up
Try to beat me up

Used to care about poverty
Used to care about society
Now I stare it in the face
Try to beat them up

Used to be someone to trust
Used to be someone to trust
Ah but
Your politics are beginning to rust
Try to beat me up

Beat me up
Try to beat me up

Years later, the original trio reformed with Curtis MacPhee (g, vocals), playing a few shows (and joined by Mays on one occasion!) ... more
