about

From the original Chicken Pot Pie EP. Song written by Jeff Gay

SONG NOTES: Early Jeff Gay songs were sang in one of two ways: songs like Down the 'Mouth were doubled up (high and low octaves), while songs like Rubber Duck have a clear Eddie Vedder influence. 'Twas the days of grunge and although I was an old folky at heart, I wanted to be cool somehow: thus everything was Pearl Jamming. By the next year, I wasn't listening to that band any more, as evidenced by my next release from 1995: Sgt Sundae, The All American Boy. It was still godawful, but it is clear from that tape I had shifted more in the Elvis Costello direction. Anyway, many songs in these days were just changes we messed around with that I would mumble lyrics over, and I think this is clearly the case with Rubber Duck!

TECH NOTES: Transferred from original DAT by Terry Pulliam/Korey Bayer

lyrics

RUBBER DUCK

Ah, when I was a child
Used to have a rubber duck
[indistinct]
And I was all clean

Well, my father was a rolling stone
And he can't even roll his own
Roll his own

But then one day
Took it away
I had nothing to do when stuck in the bath
[indistinct]
Just because that stuff made me feel good

Made me good
Now I can't even roll my own

[indistinct]

Well, my father was a rolling stone
And I can't even roll his own

And now I have problems of my own
Problems of my own
Problems of my own

Rolling stone
I can't even roll his own
Roll his own
